Are Court Records Public in Rockbridge County?
Virginia's general presumption is that court records are open to the public. Virginia Code § 17.1-208 requires circuit court clerks to make their records available for inspection by any person, except where another law restricts access. Arrest Records and Criminal History Checks
Arrest records and law enforcement files are not maintained by the courts. Rockbridge County Civil Court Records
Civil jurisdiction follows the same court-level split as criminal matters. Marriage Records
The Rockbridge Circuit Court Clerk's Office maintains marriage records dating back to 1778, making it a valuable genealogical resource. The Virginia Department of Health's Office of Vital Records holds statewide marriage records from 1936 onward. Under Virginia Code § 32.1-271, marriage records become fully public 25 years after the event date. Before that threshold, access is limited to immediate family members with valid identification.
