King George County, Virginia sits along the Potomac River in the Northern Neck region, and its court system handles a full range of civil, criminal, family, and probate matters for residents and businesses in the county. Court records generated through these proceedings include written documents, electronic filings, and recordings that detail the nature of cases, the parties involved, hearing schedules, case outcomes, and any judgments or sentences issued. These records serve practical purposes for attorneys, litigants, researchers, journalists, and members of the general public who need to verify case outcomes, conduct background reviews, or trace legal history. Information typically found within a court record includes party names, docket or case numbers, filing and hearing dates, statutory citations, case status, and any recorded judgments or sentencing details.

How to Look Up a Court Case in King George County?

King George County operates a combined court system that brings together the Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court under a shared courthouse complex. This arrangement centralizes most court business in the county, making record searches relatively straightforward once you know which division handled the matter.

For Circuit Court cases — which include felony criminal proceedings, major civil actions, and appeals — the primary online tool is the Circuit Case Management System (CJIS), operated by the Supreme Court of Virginia. Users can search this system by party name, case number, case type, or hearing date. For General District Court matters, including misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and small civil claims, the General District Court Online Case Information System provides a comparable search interface. The Virginia judiciary has also developed an Online Case Information System (OCIS 2.0) offering a broader statewide search across multiple court divisions.

For in-person or written requests, the Clerk of the Circuit Court is the primary custodian of court records in King George County. The Circuit Clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and is closed on state holidays. To request records by phone, contact the office at (540) 775-3322. Written requests may also be submitted through the county’s online FOIA request form.

The main courthouse complex and clerk’s mailing address for record requests is:

Clerk of the Circuit Court
Address: 10446 Government Center Boulevard, Suite 271, King George, VA 22485
Phone: (540) 775-3322
Fax: (540) 775-5466

The three courts share the physical courthouse location at 9483 Kings Highway, King George, VA 22485 for court proceedings, while the clerk’s administrative office is at the Government Center Boulevard address above.

Are Court Records Public in King George County?

Court records in King George County are presumed to be open to the public under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), codified at § 2.2-3700 et seq. of the Code of Virginia. The law establishes a strong presumption in favor of public access, requiring that any exemption from disclosure be narrowly interpreted and applied. Records may only be withheld when a specific statutory exemption applies.

Under FOIA, King George County must respond to any public records request within five working days of receipt. The county may provide the records in full, withhold them entirely with a written explanation citing the specific Code section allowing withholding, provide partial records with redactions, or notify the requester that the records do not exist. If a response is practically impossible within five days, the county may take up to 12 working days total by notifying the requester in writing.

Common categories of restricted records include:

  • Personnel records, except for job titles, salaries, and expense reimbursements (§ 2.2-3705.1(1))
  • Records protected by attorney-client privilege (§ 2.2-3705.1(2)) or attorney work product (§ 2.2-3705.1(3))
  • Medical and social services records
  • Vendor proprietary information (§ 2.2-3705.1(6))
  • Records relating to contract negotiations prior to award (§ 2.2-3705.1(12))
  • Victims’ identifying information and personal contact information
  • Records concerning administrative investigations where disclosure could harm public safety

Requesters are not required to state their purpose, and FOIA requests do not need to be in writing — though written requests create a clearer record. The county may charge for staff time spent searching, copying costs, and other direct costs related to fulfilling the request. If estimated charges exceed $200, the county may require a deposit before proceeding. Requesters may also contact the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council at (804) 225-3056 or toll-free at (866) 448-4100, or by email at foiacouncil@dls.virginia.gov, for guidance on FOIA rights.

It is worth noting that beginning July 1, 2026, criminal record sealing procedures became available in Virginia. Residents seeking information about record sealing should consult the King George County sealing information page or speak with an attorney licensed in Virginia.

King George County Civil Court Records

Civil matters in King George County are divided between the Circuit Court and the General District Court based on the value and complexity of the claim. The Circuit Court handles larger civil disputes, equity matters, and appeals from lower courts. The General District Court handles civil claims, small claims, and civil support matters at a lower jurisdictional threshold.

The Civil and Criminal Cases page on the county’s official website provides direct links to the case search systems. The Land Records Division of the Circuit Court Clerk’s office maintains property-related civil records including deeds, plats, mortgages, and liens. A free public index is available at kinggeorgelandrecords.org, which allows users to search recorded instrument information by name. Note that the index does not allow viewing of the actual recorded documents — only the index entries. Remote document access requires a paid annual subscription of $550.00 (lump sum) or $600.00 (monthly installments). To subscribe, complete the Application for Internet Access to Records Management System (PDF) and submit it with the subscription fee to the clerk’s office.

Copy fees for land records are $0.50 per page for standard paper copies, $2.00 for certification, and $2.00 for large-format plat maps. The clerk’s office also accepts electronic recording (e-recording) for land documents. All documents submitted for recording must be original, signed, and notarized; fax copies are not accepted. Recordings require a Virginia Land Record Cover Sheet, and deed recording costs can be estimated using the Virginia Supreme Court’s deed calculator.

Homeowners may also enroll in the free Property Recordation Notification service to receive email alerts when a new document bearing their name is recorded in the clerk’s office.

The Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Vital Records also issues certified divorce certificates for an additional fee of $12.00 per copy. Eligible persons may apply online through the VDH vital records portal, visit nearby VDH locations in the Rappahannock district, or mail applications with payment to VDH, Office of Vital Records, P.O. Box 1000, Richmond, Virginia 23218-1000.

Marriages are not performed by the clerk’s office; officiants include ministers whose ordination papers are on file with the court or licensed marriage commissioners. Certified copies of marriage licenses issued since 1856 are available from the Circuit Court Clerk at $2.50 per certified copy, with a 25-year restriction on public access under Virginia state law.

The VDH Office of Vital Records issues statewide marriage certificates at $12.00 per copy using the same application and submission procedures described above for divorce certificates.
